Without Saying

July 16, 2011

He knows her mood

by the way she says good morning.

She knows the sadness

that lurks behind his winning smile.

He knows the desires of her heart

and why she can’t quite allow them to be hers.

She knows what he wants next

and what holds him back from moving towards it.

He knows the depth and breadth of her love,

and cries with her when dreams fail.

She chilled champagne and toasted him when he made his dream come true

even though it meant he would leave her.

He sees the best in her, when she can’t see it for herself.

She’s there when things are hard and nights are long and the past looks better than the future.

No vows, no bonds, no claims lay between these two,

just the shared history

of a walk through this life,

its ups and down, its surprises and unexpectedness,

and hands that won’t quite fit together

but hearts that always will.

Because Jeff asked me for a poem, and because I’d do anything for him, now and always.
